Tips to arrive to the city of Cusco

Even if you arrive by plane or bus, you’ll be a potential prey to tourist hunters. They will offer you accommodation or taxis that leads you to the city center. Nevertheless, the city center is just a few minutes away from the airport and the city is not that big. Crossing it by feet may take you about 2 hours. The ideal is to take a taxi outside the airport and to make deaf ears to the pullers (unless you are really interested in their proposals).

There are dozens of transport companies of all price and quality on most cities of Peru. Usually travelers arrive from Lima, Arequipa or Puno. Given the informality of the routes, we recommend taking the best possible services on buses as they do not stop so much to collect people on the way. The duration of the trip Lima – Cusco can last between 15 and 21 hours depending on the service you choose.

What to see and do in Cusco?

There are many things that will inevitably form part of your journey, like the cobbled streets with stories to tell, the crafts markets, the stone of twelve angles, the great cathedral and several churches that will cross your path. These are however some of the most advisable things to browse in the city:

San Blas.

This is a mandatory place of passage. Starting from the main square by the Andean narrow streets you’ll arrive after a few uphill steps. The tourist, Andean and romantic atmosphere will catch you while you get to see the city from the heights.

San Pedro Market.

It is one of the most varied and exotic place for food and regional products. Fresh coca leaves, pure cacao, best quality coffee, fruit juices and typical dishes are just some of the things you will find. It’s ideal to go there if you want to save money.

Sacsayhuaman.

Going upstairs and along the winding road that goes in the direction towards the Christ that observes the whole city, you will find the fortress of Sacsayhuaman. This is the first approach you will have with the Inca architecture before going to Machu Picchu. Galleries, steps and windows made of stone ate the main attraction as well as a big esplanade to relax the view. Watch out for the girls in colorful attire walking llamas. Taking pictures of them is not free.

Temple of the moon.

Not far from Sacsayhuaman you will find archeological remains of the temple of the moon.

Qoricancha.

This was originally the temple of the sun but then the Spanish built the convent of Santo Domingo above it. It is currently one of the most interesting temples in the heart of the city of Cusco.
